Input Devices Introduction

Vizard supports a large variety of input devices. This includes standard devices (e.g. keyboard and mouse), position and orientation trackers, gloves, eye trackers, gaming devices, haptic devices and more. In addition, any device supported by VRPN is accessible using the generic VRPN plug-in.

What is tracking?

In a nutshell, tracking is when you use external hardware to detect movement of a user. Very often this detection movement is relayed back to the render process in order to update the viewpoint or end effect, such as one's hands.

Types of tracking includes:

Sensors

Sensors are plug-ins that interface between Vizard and hardware. Sensors make the functions and data provided by the hardware manufacturers' APIs available to Vizard. The plug-ins documented in this Input devices section include the standard sensor functions described in the Sensors Basics page in addition to any hardware specific commands.

VRPN

VRPN is a protocol used in VR systems for transmitting data between physical devices (tracker etc.) and application programs (e.g Vizard). Use the VRPN plug-in to access this data in Vizard.
